On this Island, op. 11

Testo delle parti vocali (nota 1)

LET THE FLORID MUSIC PRAISE CHE LA MUSICA POMPOSA CELEBRI
Let the florid music praise,
The flute and the trumpet, Beauty's
conquest of your face;
In that land of flesh and bone,
Where from citadels on high her
imperial standards fly,
Let the hot sun shine on, shine on.
O, but the unlov'd have had power,
The weeping and striking, always, always;
Time will bring their hour: their
secretive children
Walk through your vigilance of breath
To unpardonable death,
Any my vows break before his look.
Che la musica pomposa celebri,
Il flauto e la tromba,
bellezza che conquista il tuo viso:
In quel territorio di carne e di osso,
Dove dall'alto di fortezze
garriscono i suoi stendardi imperiali,
Che il caldo sole splenda, splenda sempre.
Oh, ma i non amati hanno avuto il potere,
Coloro che piangono e che colpiscono,
Sempre il tempo porterà la loro ora;
I reticenti figli di costoro avanzano
Attraverso le vigili difese del tuo respiro
Verso l'imperdonabile Morte,
Davanti al cui sguardo si infrangono i miei voti.
NOW THE LEAVES ARE FALLING FAST ORA LE FOGLIE CADONO VELOCI
Now the leaves are falling fast,
Nurse's flowers will not last;
Nurses to the graves are gone,
And the prams go rolling on.

Whisp'ring neighbours, left and right
Pluck us from the real delight;
And the active hands must freeze
Lonely on the sep'rate knees.

Dead in hundreds at the back
Follow wooden in our track,
Arms raised stiffly to reprove
In false attitudes of love.

Starving through the leafless wood
Trolls run scolding for their food;
And the nightingale is dumb,
And the angel will not come.

Cold, impassible, ahead
Lifts the mountain's lovely head
Whose white waterfall could bless
Travellers in their last distress.
Ora le foglie cadono veloci,
I fiori della balia non dureranno;
Le balie sono andate nelle loro tombe
E le carrozzine continuano ad avanzare.

Mormoranti vicini, a sinistra e a destra
Ci strappano dal vero piacere
E le mani industriose debbono immobilizzarsi
Solitarie sui ginocchi separati.

I morti a centinaia, dietro,
Seguono legnosi sulle nostre tracce,
Braccia alzate rigide per redarguire
In falsi atteggiamenti di amore.

Affamati nel bosco senza foglie
Elfi corrono borbottando in cerca di cibo;
Ed è muto l'usignolo,
E l'angelo non verrà.

Freddo, impassibile, avanti
Si alza il bel capo della montagna
La cui bianca cascata potrebbe gratificare
I viandanti nel loro ultimo travaglio.
SEASCAPE MARINA
Look, stranger, at this island now
The leaping light for your delight discovers,
Stand stable here
And silent be,
That through the channels of the ear
May wander like a river
The swaying sound of the sea.

Here at the small field's ending pause
Where the chalk wall falls to the foam,
And its tall ledges
Oppose the pluck
And knock of the tide,
And the shingle scrambles after the sucking surf,
And the gull lodges
A moment on its sheer side.

Far off like floating seeds the ships
Diverge on urgent voluntary errands;
And the full view
Indeed may enter
And move in memory as now these clouds do,
That pass the harbour mirror
And all the summer through the water saunter.
Through the water saunter.
Guarda, straniero, quest'isola,ora
La saltellante luce per il tuo piacere scopre,
Fermati stabile qui
E sii muto,
Così che attraverso i canali dell'orecchio
Possa vagare come un fiume
Il suono oscillante del mare.

Qui alla pausa terminale del piccolo campo
Dove il muro di gesso cede alla spuma,
e i suoi alti cornicioni
Si oppongono agli strappi
E ai colpi bussati dalla marea,
E la ghiaia annaspa dietro la risucchiarne risacca,
E il gabbiano dimora
Per un momento sul suo fianco nudo.

Lontano come semi galleggianti le navi
Divergono in urgenti missioni volontarie;
E il quadro completo
Invero può fare il suo ingresso
Ed entrare nella memoria come ora fanno queste nuvole,
Che passano lo specchio del porto
E tutta l'estate gironzolano per, l'acqua,
Gironzolano per l'acqua.
NOCTURNE NOTTURNO
Now thro'nights caressing grip
Earth and all her oceans slip,
Capes of China slide away
From her fingers into day
And th Americas incline
Coasts toward her shadow line.
Now the ragged vagrants creep
Into crooked holes to sleep;
Just and unjust, worst and best.
Change their places as they rest,
Akward lovers lie in fields
Where disdainful beauty yields:
While the splendid and the proud
Naked stand before the crowd
And the losing gambler gains
And the beggar entertains.
May sleep's healing power extend
Through these hours to our friend
Unpursued by hostile force.
Traction, engine, bull or horse
Or revolting succubus;
Calmly till the morning break let him lie,
Then gently wake.
Ora attraverso la carezzevole stretta della notte
Scivolano la terra e tutti i suoi oceani,
Promontori della Cina le sgusciano
Dalle dita nel giorno
E le Americhe inclinano
Coste verso la sua linea d'ombra,
Ora gli stracciati girovaghi strisciano
In tortuosi pertugi per dormire;
Giusti e ingiusti, peggiori e migliori
Scambiano i posti mentre riposano,
Goffi amanti giacciono in campi
Dove sdegnosa beltà cede:
Mentre gli splendidi e gli orgogliosi
Nudi stanno davanti alla folla
E il giocatore che perdeva, vince
E il mendicante dà una festa.
Possa il potere risanatore del sonno estendersi
Per queste ore al nostro amico
Non inseguito da forza ostile.
Trazione, macchina, toro o cavallo
O succube ribelle
Lo lascino dormire con calma fino all'alba,
Poi dolcemente lo déstino.
AS IT IS, PLENTY COSÌ COM'È, È TANTO
As it is, plenty;
As it's admitted
The children happy
And the car, the car
That goes so far
And the wife devoted:
To this as it is,
To the work and the banks
Let this thinning hair
And his hauteur
Give thanks, give thanks.

All that was thought
As like as not, is not;
When nothing was enough
But love, but love
And the rough future
Of an intransigent nature
And the betraying smile.
Betraying, but a smile;
That that is not, is not;
Forget, forget, forget.

Let him not cease to praise
Then his spacious days;
Yes, and the success
Let him bless, let him bless:
Let him see in this
The profits larger
And the sins venial,
Let he see as it is
The loss as major
And final, final, final,
Final, final, final.
Così com'è, è tanto;
Come si ammette,
I bambini contenti
E l'automobile, l'automobile
Che va così lontano
E la moglie devota:
A questo così com'è,
Al lavoro e alle banche
Questi capelli che si diradano
E questa prosopopea
Rendano grazie, rendano grazie.

Tutto quello che si pensava,
Infallibilmente, non è;
Quando niente bastava
Tranne l'amore, tranne l'amore
E il futuro duro
Di una natura intransigente
E il sorriso traditore,
Traditore, ma sorriso;
Quello che non è, non è;
Dimentica, dimentica, dimentica.

Che non cessi costui di lodare
Dunque, i suoi giorni spaziosi;
Sì, e il successo
Lo benedica, lo benedica:
Che veda in questo
I profitti aumentati
E i peccati veniali,
Purché non veda così com'è
La perdita come una perdita grave
E definitiva, definitiva, definitiva,
Definitiva, definitiva, definitiva.
